Why did Polobin become famous? Friends and subordinates certainly admired his impulsive character and courage. Even as a general, despite the prohibition, he continued flying combat. He never left his pilots in difficult missions, or at least in such a way Soviet propaganda showed him. Crazy ideas of Polbin connected with tactical aviation went down in history. Above all the first known use of bombers to shoot down enemy aircraft is attributed to him (usually addressing this with the escort fighters). In October 1943 his regiment destroyed six German planes while losing three of their own. That way the Soviet bombing avoided enemy positions. In 1942 he was awarded the highest title of Hero of the Soviet Union, and three years later he received it the second time. Unfortunately posthumously.

What happened in 1945 above burning Breslau? On February 10, 1945 there was held the first Soviet air raids on the capital of Lower Silesia. The next day, beautiful weather encouraged Polbin who stationed in Brzeg to lead the regiment of nine bombers over Oporów, a village near Wroclaw. He chose to fly over the city, hoping that would hide in the dense smoke bursting from the burning buildings. This courageous decision proved disastrous for him and the crew. Pe-2 aircraft was spotted and shot down by a cannon standing in Fiołkowa street near today’s FAT. The machine exploded, the remains of the general has never been found.

Nowadays, one of the streets of Kozanów is named after him.

Non-Olympic sports competitions will be held in Wroclaw in 37 disciplines. Wroclaw can propose five of them. “Two disciplines which we will propose as an organizer will be lacrosse and kickboxing in formula K1. We will let the residents of Wroclaw to select the other three” – explains Piotr Uhle of the committee of The World Games 2017 in Wroclaw.

Wroclaw will be visited by approximately 3.5 thousand participants and more than 400 thousand fans.

The World Games is an international sports event which started in 1981 and is organized in the year after the summer Olympic Games (under the auspices of the IOC – thus it is right to the Olympic rings). Some of the sports played at the World Games are former Olympic disciplines (tug), or were incorporated into the Olympic program (triathlon, taekwondo).

The purpose of the construction of this building is to stimulate a desire to understand the human body and mind, as well as curiosity and respect for the surrounding world. Humanitarium will offer visitors an interactive exhibition with multimedia elements. Everything you can touch, hear, smell and not only just see. The idea is to gain knowledge through direct experience as this exhibition will explore all the senses.

Humanitarium is not only an attraction for children and young people. A wide range of software will also appeal to their parents, grandparents and teachers. In Humanitarium one can find an exhibition hall with a mezzanine, a rotunda conference room, two laboratories for young investigators, and a souvenir shop in the lobby and a small catering point.

The centre for Humanitarium will be divided into several thematic sections, including: human body, the world of the senses, ecology and energy, engineering, genetics, medicine. It will contain more than 40 interactive exhibits.

- Thanks to them visitors will know different sources of energy that can be used in everyday life,
- They will test their senses: seeing, hearing, touching, smelling, and the sense of balance,
- They will see how much water there is in our body,
- and will know which way a drug must travel before it reaches a pharmacy.

In Humanitarium complicated issues related to cloning and gene therapy will be explained using a multimedia game.

On December 10, 2011 there was open a showroom of a gallery in the city center. The owners of DecoBazaar invite all who life would like to see the work of young Polish designers, so far only available via the Internet. They have for you a lot of beautiful objects, from ceramics, jewellary, and fashion clothing and accessories.

For their headquarter they has chosen the ground floor of a beautiful nineteenth century building, which is located in the heart of the bohemian district of Nadodrze. It is a place of vibrant artistic life in Wroclaw, new galleries, studios and various cultural initiatives. You can easily get there from the vicinity of the market square, starting from the Old City through the University Gate. It’s only a 5 minute walk.

- The last five years were probably the biggest step forward in the history of web technologies. For its part, I wanted to thank Slawek Sochaj and Mirek Polyniak that allowed me to participate in this event and together with Opera Software to celebrate its 5th anniversary and meet bloggers/people who are keen on new technologies, social media etc.: Pozytywna Kuchnia, Cakes and the City, Strawberries from Poland,  Brunette’s Heart, Zuch rysuje, Spider’s Web, Kominek and MC Silk. I wish Opera a lot of next anniversaries!

Its construction began in 1765 and lasted eight years. The designer of the first draft was Isidore Cannevale, but the final authorship is attributed to the prince building inspector – Carl Gotthard Langhans. Langhans slightly changed the concept of Cannevale by mostly redesigning the interior of the new palace, but the solid Roman Renaissance style of facades remained compatible with the design of Cannevale.

Owing to this structure Carl Gotthard Langhans won considerable renown and began a successful career in architecture (his most celebrated example is  Brandenburg Gate in Berlin). New Hatzfelds residence was one of the largest such buildings in Silesia. It occupied the entire width of the quarter between Krowia and saint Wita streets. Quiet and elegant facade, referring to the best Italian and Austrian examples, was one of the most outstanding contemporary realizations on the European scale.

In 1802 the palace was passed to the city and became the seat of provincial and district authorities. Unfortunately, almost 150 years later – during the siege of Festung Breslau – it was severely damaged. New Market square was occupied by a battery of artillery for which the upper floors of the palace had been demolished to facilitate fire. The main facade collapsed in 1946. Though the entire ground floor survived the war , its large part was demolished due to the demand for brick.

For several years after the war the ruins of the Hatzfelds Palace  was a place of  films shooting. At the beginning a complete reconstruction of the object was planned, but soon the idea was abandoned  apparently because during the war the palace was the seat of the Silesian district chief – Karl Hanke. The palace was rebuilt in the 60s as a relic – half of the ground floor and mezzanine stroke – and then it became the seat of the gallery of modern art.

In 2006, the window frames and doors were replaced, part of the front facade was insulated and bright red shutters were installed on the glazing tops. In March 2007, there were plans for the reconstruction of the building for the the City Council. High investment costs, however, stopped  the reconstruction. Former Hatzfelds Palace  is still waiting for better times. It is a good idea not to hurry with a “cheap” reconstruction, because the class of the building deserves to reproduce as accurate  details as possible and the use of the best materials.

Christmas Fai

The ice sculptures (for example a Snow Queen and her throne) will be a new thing of the fair.  They will appear at 1 p.m. on December 3. Among other attractions of the fair there will be a small forge where a smith will make horseshoes for luck and a place where a minter will strike  coins.

As every year,  a gift dwarf, who fulfills Christmas wishes, will come to the fair. On the balcony of the house “At the dwarf” there will  be chamber concerts and carol songs for children.

Traditionally, on December 6 Santa Claus will visit the fair. Sleigh and reindeer will park at the monument of Fredro. Fairytale Forest will grow and it will be hosted by Little Red Riding Hood, Thumbelina and Sleeping Beauty.

Christmas Fair 2010

Merchants who will come to Wroclaw are from Poland, Lithuania, Hungary, Germany, Belarus, Austria and the Czech Republic. Vendors will offer mulled wine, mead, gingerbread hearts, Hungarian cake and roasted chestnuts. The fair will be open until 23 December daily from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.

The 14-year history of the festival is created by the most outstanding musicians from all over the world: including Paco de Lucia, Tommy Emmanuel, Joscho Stephan, John McLaughlin, Al Di Meola, Chick Corea, Kenny Garrett, Christian McBride, Jesse Cook, Louis Winsberg, Martin Taylor, Gene Bertoncini, Aniello Desiderio, Tomatito, Canizares, Rafael Cortes, Rolf Lislevand , Zoran Dukić, Jorge Morel, Pavel Steidl, Marcin Dylla, Mark Pasieczny, Marek Napiórkowski, Arthur Lesicki, Wojtek Pilichowski Kurzak and Alexander, Anna Maria Jopek, Dorota Miskiewicz, Krzesimir Debski, Group MoCarta. Since the beginning of the guitar festival in Wrocław it was Krzysztof Pelech, its founder and artistic director, who was responsible for the its artistic programme.

PROGRAMME&TICKETS

This year Paco de Lucía will come to Wroclaw.  He will perform with a band on 27 November in the Centennial Hall for a spectacular ending of the Festival. In addition, another representative of flamenco from Spain – Carlos Pinan, will begin the event in Impart Art Centre together with Preston Reed, who plays in fingerstyle technique (like Tommy Emmanuel), Antonio Forcione, called “Jimi Hendrix of acoustic guitar,” and many other great musicians of international importance. The festival will start on 18 and end on 27 November.

The 2nd

In The Highlights section one will see demonstrations of the latest, high-profile titles with the stars of American cinema. The film opening of this year’s festival will be “Dark Horse” which is Todd Solondz’s latest film, screened at this year’s Venice competition. Wrocław audience will be the first in Poland who will see the latest films by Gus Van Sant (Restless), Kevin Smith (Red State) and Miranda July (The Future). The festival will also include such events as: Jack Goes Boating a comedy drama and an outstanding directing debut of the actor Philip Seymour Hoffman, Blue Valentine by Derek Cienfrance, a film about  the breakup of the marriage of a young Ryan Gosling go-ahead creation and Oscar nominee of Michelle Williams and Last Night the intimate drama of the all-star cast (Keira Knightley, Eva Mendes, Sam Worthington). The festival will be closed by the original comedy Damsels in Distress by Whit Stillman, which ended this year’s festival in Venice.

In The Spectrum section of viewers one will see Somewhere Tonight by Michael Di Jiacomo starring John Turturro  - a strange story about a couple of New York loners who meet on the sextelephone; The Dish and the spoon by Alison Bagnall starring a go-ahead rising star of the American cinema Greta Gerwig as a betrayed wife, who spontaneously runs away from home and moves in crazy love of travel and Love by William Eubank – like the recent Moon, an arthouse project of alternative rock band Angels & Airwaves, metaphysical poem about loneliness.

Among the documentaries in the American docs there will be: a winner (chosen by audience) of the competition of last year’s festival in Austin, SXSW Marwencol by Jeff Malmberg, and The Other Word “F” by Andrea Blaugrund of rockers, who turned the crazy life of musicians to calm paternity, and Something Ventured by Dan Geller and Dayna Goldfine, about the road of the technological giants to the top of American economy. Among this year’s films there will also be autothematic works, such as the American Grindhouse the exploitation of the history of cinema, among others with Quentin Tarantino. In the section there will be also the latest provocative work of a document master, Errol Morris – Tabloid, a funny-scary movie about the power of colour press. Another film about media is Page One: A Year Inside “The New York Times”, whose author Andrew Rossi spent a year with a camcorder in the editorial office of one of the world’s largest newspapers.

PROGRAMME

The heroes of retrospectives at the 2^nd AFF will be: born in Sucha Beskidzka, a classic of American cinema and a winner of six Academy Awards Billy Wilder (The Apartment, The Seven Year Itch, Sunset Boulevard), Todd Solondz – a great American independent creator (Happiness, Palindromes), filmmaker – philosopher Terrence Malick – the author of the legendary Days of Heaven and The Thin Red Line, a winner of the Golden Palme at this year’s International Film Festival in Cannes for Tree of Life, Joe Swanberg, representative of the mumblecore mainstream, who wins young audience and festivals. During the festival we will also see the latest film by Nicholas Ray – experimental “We Can’t Go Home Again”, reconstructed by his wife Susanne Ray.

Till now, the festival has hosted Wayne Shorter, Charles Lloyd, Kenny Wheeler and Gary Peacock. The songs were written by: John Surman, Terje Rypdal and Kenny Wheeler and by brilliant young Polish musicians – Piotr Damasiewicz and Nikola Kołodziejczyk.

Jazztopad Festival was also a prestigious group of five major European festivals in the project Take Five Europe (addressed to the most talented musicians of the younger generation). For three years, the festival has been also supporting the rising stars of jazz in the international platform JazzPlaysEurope.

This year’s edition is a natural continuation of the process that began three years ago.

Programme

The biggest concert event will be of course the concert of legendary Sonny Rollins. This fall, the giant of jazz will play only in four European cities! It is an honour that Jazztopad Wroclaw and the festival belong to this small group.

An eminent American pianist Fred Hersch is going to perform for the first time in Poland. He specially wrote new arrangements for jazz trio and chamber orchestra.

For the third time one can hear a jazz score JazzPlaysEurope laboratory work, which this year will work in Amsterdam.  In Poland it will be represented by Michał Bryndal.

One can also see two very intimate evenings: long-term companion duo of Miles Davis – Dave Liebman with Richie Bairachem and an outstanding Swedish pianist Bobo Stenson with Jon Falt. Both concerts will be their only concerts in Europe.

Last weekend there will be a kind of marathon, held as part of the Culture Season of NRW (North Rhine and Westphalia) in Poland 2011/12. The project of 24 Run: what’s in the fridge?” will fill different places in the center of Wroclaw for 24 hours  with the jazz from Germany and Poland. Its culmination there will be three concerts in Wroclaw Philharmonic: Invisible Change, Maciej Obara Quartet and the final premiere of the composition of Uri Caine  for Lutosławski Quartet.
