The complex was designed in the middle of the 60s of the last century by Jadwiga Grabowska-Hawrylak in cooperation with Zdzisław Kowalski and Włodzimierz Wasilewski. It was built in the middle of the 70s of the last century and has been very controversial since then.

The buildings could have been built by using white concrete that looked in  the sun like “Biała Marianna” marble . In the cavities of the buildings between the oval guards and windows could have been pots with climbing plants so which could combine with clinker brick cavities around balcony, the dark wood on some indoor walls and grass roofs of sales pavilions. It could have given a unique character of Mediterranean climate to the centre of the city. The avant-garde  character of the project was too unique at that time because the production possibilities were limited. The buildings were built with grey concrete, without any plants and roofs that weren’t covered by membrane.

The history of these 6 buildings joined by the concrete esplanda that each of them is 55 meters tall focus all drama and comedies of construction of the 60s and the 70s in Poland. First the estate was supposed to be built as a city investment that would be funded by special donation. Because of the crisis and problem with donation the cost of the investment was taken by a housing association.

The chance for Wroclaw’s Manhattan is adding to the register of monuments so it can help to get a donation for its complex renovation.
